Opportunity Passport

What is Opportunity Passport™? It is a financial literacy and asset match savings program designed for youth and young adults, age 14 to 26, who have experienced foster care. This unique matched savings program helps young people improve their financial capability when transitioning from foster care or navigating other youth-serving systems. With Opportunity Passport™ you get dollar-for-dollar match on the money you save to purchase an approved asset.  See how Opportunity Passport™ allows young people to practice the skills they need to wisely earn, spend, and save money.

​Opportunity Passport includes two pathway options for trainings. Each training will be a max of 1.5 hours long. Participants must attend multiple trainings prior to being eligible to match (4 trainings or 8 trainings, depending on the pathway).

  How do I participate in Opportunity Passport?
      You are eligible to participate in Opportunity Passport if you are:

      You are between the ages of 14 to 26

      You are or were in the foster care system at age 14 or older

      A resident of Georgia​ 

 

The Process:
        Get Educated. To start the enrollment process, you must attend and complete a series of financial literacy classes. The class          topics include asset building, credit, and money management. Youth have two options when completing the Opportunity              Passport Keys to your Financial Future training: Financially Literate (Keys1-4) or 
Opportunity Passport (Key 1-8).

          Save & Purchase. Done with the classes?  The next step is to open a savings account, complete an enrollment application                and the baseline survey. Start saving to have  the opportunity to have your money (up to $3,000) matched dollar-for-dollar            to purchase an approved asset! That’s right. When you’re ready to purchase an asset, for every dollar you save one dollar                will be matched. Approved assets include investments that help you get ahead in life: 

  • First month's rent or housing down payment

  • Medical/dental/healthcare expenses

  • Educational expenses like tuition, fees, books, or a computer for school

  • Purchasing a vehicle including the cost of insurance, and registration 

  • Microenterprise (starting your own business) 

  •  Credit building (improving your credit score or paying off a debt in collections)

This class is 100% virtual. If youth do not have access to a web camera, they will still be able to attend the virtual training sessions. However, they are required to attend the virtual training on a device that will allow them to hear and see the presentation from the training facilitator.
